trailer training test pass for Tom on his Get Towing… trailer test

Well done to Tom who passed his B+E (car and trailer) driving test at West Thurrock Driving Test Centre in Essex.

Tom met me at Get Towing trailer training in Southend-on-Sea in Essex and completed a 2 day intensive trailer training driving course and B+E driving test.

He enquired for a ‘trailer licence and B+E Trailer Test’

The Examiner for the B+E driving test complemented him on a safe drive with only 4 minors.

The reversing exercise was completed with no minor faults after practicing it many times at our reversing site, before the trailer test.

After that Tom had to carry out the un-couple and re-couple exercise, which scored no minors faults as again we practiced this many times.

His trailer licence should be back to his home address within 2 weeks as the examiner sent it off for him as his address on the drivers licence was the same as where he currently living.

The roundabouts in that part of Essex can be tricky, but Tom coped well with the difficult junctions around the parts of Essex that we drove around Basildon can be particularly challenging if you are not used to the layout. Basildon and Laindon are noted for their three lane approach roundabouts.

We carry out these courses and tests all over the Essex area at locations including; Basildon, Enfield, Dagenham, Ilford, Romford, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Colchester…

Well done again Tom, work will be pleased 🙂

What the law says about towing…

If you passed your driving test after the 1st January 1997 (including re-tests) you must pass a practical category B+E driving course and test to tow a trailer which exceeds 750kg on a vehicle weighing 3,500kg; or car and trailer/caravan towing/horsebox towing combination over 3,500kg.
One day Get Towing car and trailer training course
This car and trailer training course will be suitable for an experienced driver with some towing experience (e.g. off road). And a good standard of driving
The one day course consists of a 6 hour session costing £399. ——NO OTHER HIDDEN COSTS!—-
Two day Get Towing car and trailer training course
This course will suit a driver with little or no towing experience and should provide plenty of preparation time for the trailer driving test. And a reasonable standard of driving
The two day course consists of two 6 hour sessions costing £599. ——NO OTHER HIDDEN COSTS!—-
What does the training involve?
The training will be based on meeting the criteria for successfully pass the trailer test. In addition we also introduce some advanced eco/safe driving skills which will enhance your driving skills for life.
You will need to demonstrate that you can drive to a high and safe standard when towing.
You must demonstrate that you can safely uncouple and recouple your trailer to your vehicle.
You will need to know that all the trailer lights are working and that inspect the trailer as if you had never previously used it.
You must demonstrate how to reverse your trailer (‘s’ manoeuvre) over a distance into a relatively confined (but sufficiently wide) area into a marked stopping position which will require you to judge the length of your car and trailer combination.
We will cover the basic vehicle check questions 2 of which will be asked by the examiner.
What does the Driving test involve?
This test is based on the lorry driving test and lasts for approx.1.5 hours. Do not underestimate the skills you will need to demonstrate for this test.
Every B+E driving test takes approx. 90 mins to complete. B+E Driving tests are only conducted at HGV (bus & lorry) driving test centres. You MUST bring your valid driving license! The examiner will need to see and check it before you begin the test.
At Get Towing… We have a test centre to visit nearby in West Thurrock and Chelmsford
At the start of the test you will be required to read a number plate to check your eyesight. You will then be asked a number of Questions about the safety of your vehicle & trailer. We issue all our pupils with the “Show Me Tell Me” Questions. Study these in your own time. You then have to complete a reverse manoeuvre.
The road drive will include a 10-20 minute independent driving session. Upon return to the test centre you will need to demonstrate the uncoupling and re-coupling procedure. Let us teach you how to perform the “S Manoeuvre” (which you have to be able to do independently). We will explain the DSA method of reversing and all the safety checks you will need to know. Our Trainers will teach you how to carry out your lighting checks and the order in which you will have to couple and uncouple the trailer when you are on the trailer driving test.
Do not underestimate the standard of driving that you will need to achieve to be successful in the B+E test. The majority of drivers that fail the B+E test do so because their road driving skills do not meet the required standard. If you make mistakes on test the crucial issue is not to worry, the mistake might be less serious and may not affect your result. The examiner is looking for an overall safe standard of driving during the driving test.
Tow vehicles test requirements
You can take your test in either a Manual or Automatic transmission vehicle. We can help if you want to use one of our manual towing vehicles for the trailer training and B+E driving test purposes. If you pass using an automatic then you are entitled to tow using only an automatic transmission. If you pass using a manual transmission vehicle you are entitled to tow either manual or automatic vehicles. Your vehicle must be legal and roadworthy and have no warning lights showing, e.g the engine management system warning light. It must not be subject to a manufacturers safety recall, you may be asked for evidence that your vehicle has had the work carried out, is exempt from the recall or that after being checked no work was necessary.
The vehicle also needs to be a smoke free zone. Their are other requirements involving loaded weight, head restraints, mirrors etc that we can provide details of when undertaking trailer training with us. We provide a trailer which meets all DVSA requirements.

Well done Emma for passing your Car and Trailer driving test

Well done Emma on passing your B+E driving test, in August, after calling Get Towing b+e trailer towing. She called us from Tilbury, to arrange a car and trailer driving course with a B+E driving test in West Thurrock

Emma booked a 2 day intensive car and trailer training course ensuring she was safe to tow her horse. The horse box lessons were started from Leigh-on-Sea

Who needs to take the car and trailer test? With B+E training

So you’ve plucked up the courage to take your B+E car and trailer test, and have some caravan towing lessons and/or trailer training… Graham Taylor from Get Towing Car and Trailer Training courses looks at what you can expect — from how much it will cost, to what you will be asked to do in the B+E trailer driving test by the test examiner.

Who needs to take the B+E car and trailer test, with a B+E trailer training course?

  • If you took your car (Category B) test after 19 January 2013 you can tow small trailers weighing no more than 750kg and a trailer over 750kg as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing car or van is no more than 3.5 tonnes MAM (maximum authorised mass which is the limit on how much the vehicle can weigh when it’s loaded).
  • If you passed your car driving test between 1 January 1997 and 18 January 2013 you can drive a car or van up to 3.5 tonnes MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM. You can also tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3.5 tonnes.
  • If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997 you’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM.
  • If you want to tow a trailer of a combined maximum weight (i.e. that of car, trailer, horses, tack and water) of between 3.5 tonnes and 8.25 tonnes, and you passed your car test after 1 January 1997 you’ll need to take the trailer test to get Category B+E added on to your licence.

What does passing the car and trailer B+E test enable you to do?

  • It gives you the B+E trailer entitlement, enabling you to tow a heavier trailer up to a combined maximum weight of 7 tonnes. Category B+E allows a maximum of 3.5 a tonne trailer, which is insufficient for most trailers being towed by a 3.5 tonne vehicle, your maximum weight for the towing vehicle, if you haven’t passed any C categories.
  • The test costs from £115.
  • The cost of training varies around the country and according to how many hours you need — most packages involve two to three days of training with the test on the final day.
  • Get Towing Trailer Training Courses charge are
  • £399 for a one day trailer training course,
  • £599 for an intensive two-day trailer training course and
  • £799 for three days, with the b+e trailer driving test on the last day of any course (test fees included)
  • The trailer needs to be a certain weight for the test (the trailer must carry at least 600kg and the combined weight of the trailer and load must be at least 800kg), so it’s advisable to use your instructor’s car and trailer.

How long does it take to get up to b+e, car and trailer, driving test standard

  • Get Towing Car and Trailer Training covers the dreaded reversing, coupling and uncoupling and making sure your driving is of DVSA B+E driving test standard — checking your mirrors and blind spot, being in the correct lane approaching roundabouts, ‘sticking’ to the speed limits.
  • Most drivers should budget for a two or three day intensive trailer training course, unless you are ‘very’ experienced trailer puller then a one day trailer training course may be enough.
  • Eventer Fi Smith struggled with trailer reversing, too. Her advice is, if you have your own transport, “Get out and practise as much as you can”. You will however need to be accompanied by someone who’s entitled to tow a trailer.

What should I expect from the B+E trailer test?

  • You’ll be asked vehicle safety questions, to carry out a safety check on the trailer, and to pass the registration plate reading eyesight test at a 20.5 metre distance
  • You’ll then be asked by the driving test examiner to reverse the car and trailer into a loading bay marked out with cones which you must avoid touching or going outside of the lines.
  • You’ll be asked to uncouple and recouple your car and trailer.
  • Out on the road, on your B+E driving test, you’ll drive on a variety of roads, including a 10-minute independent drive, and be asked to stop at the side of the road and move away again safely up to four times.
  • On your B+E trailer test you’re allowed up to 15 minor driving faults and no serious of dangerous  faults

How long should my B+E trailer training course be and how many trailer lessons will I need?

  • That varies with ability and experience, but we can assess your trailer driving if you wish.
  • Julie Nicolas passed first time with us at Get Towing car and trailer training after a 2 day trailer tuition course; her farmer husband “who’s been reversing tractors and trailers ‘forever” only needed a four hour lesson before the test!! (one day B+E trailer training course)

Good luck give us a call…

MORE INFORMATION BY CLICKING HERE – Trailer Licence Test Courses

In Basildon, if you are a driver from that area, you will know there are many roundabouts that will ‘catch out’ drivers on a car and trailer training courses, if planned incorrectly, not what you should be doing, of course, on your B+E driving test.

When approaching a roundabout in Basildon, during your B+E training, you will need to plan well ahead and look for some unusual lane choices that need to be negotiated with skill and care.

Many drivers avoid roundabouts in the Basildon area regarding them as ‘to difficult’ This of course is unnecessary, if you keep calm,  observe ahead and see the information you can enjoy your Basildon trailer training journey !

Basildon trailer training courses can see you facing three lanes when you approach many roundabouts. Left via the left lane, right via the right lane and ahead, usually from the middle lane, but also the right lane can be used for this. These junctions, of course, are not unique to the Basildon area and need to be planned correctly at all times.

The intersection of the A127 and A132 in Basildon has a tricky roundabout. It is important on your B+E training course that you choose your lane correctly here.

An easy method to remember during your trailer training course is, if there are two lanes heading towards your chosen direction try to choose the left option, this should make your B+E training course more successful and safer around the Basildon area.

Basildon also displays roundabouts that have the right lane for going ahead and turning right and left lane for left only. During trailer training course in Basildon if you find yourself in a situation where you are in the wrong lane for the intended direction don’t panic, go in the direction you can safely take from that lane, don’t make harsh and late lane changes.

This course of action will be fine on a B+E training course, or B+E trailer test, as the examiner will be happy you did the ‘right thing’ rather than just ‘blindly’ following his instructions.

Good luck and safe driving around Basildon
