Trailer Licence Training and Trailer Test near me
Trailer Towing Training and getting your Trailer Licence in Essex
Would you like to be able to tow a trailer safely, confidently and above all, legally on the road after taking a trailer training course and passing your trailer driving test?
Trailers come in many forms, from horseboxes to boats, to car transporters for classic cars, or a simple trailer for transporting garden waste. Trailers are an excellent way of carrying extra loads.
Instruction comes from a fully-qualified DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), our lead instructor qualified as an ADI in March 2003 and has been giving trailer towing training in Essex since 2010 helping many drivers gain their trailer licence.
Get Towing trailer training can tailor a trailer towing course to your requirements. Are you a complete novice? Have you gained experience in towing or trailer handling? If so, we will establish what you do need to learn to take the DVSA trailer towing test following an initial Assessment Session if appropriate.
Whether you are a novice or perhaps driving without the license to tow, we can assist you in obtaining the DVSA trailer towing license.
Get Towing have been giving trailer towing training in Essex for over 10 years, we offer expert, patient tuition which allows you to learn the skills required to take your DVSA trailer test and tow a trailer and its contents safely and confidently.
The DVSA regulations which cover towing a trailer or caravan are quite complicated but we are more than happy to offer guidance on whether you are required to take a DVSA test, should you wish to tow a trailer or caravan on the road. Please contact us for more information on 07956 321678 or email us
Training for experienced drivers
If you already have the trailer towing entitlement on your Driving License, but require some assistance with any aspect of towing or trailer handling, to build your confidence and improve your level of competence, we are here to help.
If you passed your test before 1st January 1997, you’re generally allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to a weight of 8,250kg.
Of course, just because you have a trailer license to do so, doesn’t mean that it is advisable.
We recommend that anyone who has the relevant license but has not towed a trailer (or caravan) on the road before, does get some basic trailer training before they actually do try towing on the road. If you would like a friendly chat to discuss this, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we are always happy to offer advice and discuss your options with you.
Good Luck!!

DVSA approved training courses for car and trailer
Get Towing offer B+E trailer training by a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor to companies and individuals who require the B+E licence category added to their list of vehicles on the drivers licence. We have a proven track record and a high first time pass rate, currently 90% on a two day course.
Our courses include the use of a vehicle and trailer for B+E training and test purposes and test exercises are conducted at our own full size training area.
One day course
This trailer training course will be suitable for an experienced driver with good towing experience (e.g. off road). The one day trailer licence course consists of a 4 hour session in total costing £250.
Two day course
This trailer training course will suit a driver with little or no towing experience and should provide plenty of preparation time for the trailer test. The two day trailer licence course consists of two 4 hour sessions costing £450.
What does the training involve?
The trailer training will be based on meeting the criteria for successfully pass the trailer course. In addition we also introduce some advanced eco/safe driving skills which will enhance your driving skills for life.
You will need to demonstrate that you can drive to a high and safe standard when trailer towing.
You must demonstrate that you can safely uncouple and recouple your trailer to your vehicle.
You will need to know that all the trailer lights are working and that inspect the trailer as if you had never previously used it.
You must demonstrate how to reverse your trailer (‘s’ manoeuvre) over a distance into a relatively confined (but sufficiently wide) area into a marked stopping position which will require you to judge the length of your car and trailer combination.
We will cover the basic vehicle check questions 2 of which will be asked by the examiner.
This test is based on the lorry driving test and lasts for approx.1.5 hours. Do not underestimate the skills you will need to demonstrate for this test.
Every B+E test takes approx 1.30 mins to complete. B+E tests are only conducted at HGV (bus & lorry) driving test centres. You MUST bring your valid driving licence! The examiner will need to see and check it before you begin the test. We have a test centre nearby in West Thurrock.
At the start of the test you will be required to read a number plate to check your eyesight.
You will then be asked a number of Questions about the safety of your vehicle & trailer. We issue all our pupils with the “Show Me Tell Me” Questions. Study these in your own time. You then have to complete a reverse manoeuvre.
The road drive will include a 10 minute independant driving session. Upon return to the test centre you will need to demonstrate the uncoupling and re-coupling procedure. Let us teach you how to perform the “S Maneouvre” (which you have to be able to do). We will explain the DSA method of reversing and all the safety checks you will need to know. Our Trainers will teach you how to carry out your lighting checks and the order in which you will have to couple and uncouple the trailer when you are on test.
Do not underestimate the standard of driving that you will need to achieve to be successful in the test. The majority of drivers that fail the B+E test do so because their road driving skills do not meet the required standard. If you make mistakes on test the crucial issue is not to worry, the mistake might be less serious and may not affect your result. The examiner is looking for an overall safe standard of driving.
You can take your test in either a Manual or Automatic transmission vehicle. We can help if you want to hire one of our manual towing vehicles for training or test purposes. If you pass using an automatic then you are entitled to tow using only an automatic transmission. If you pass using a manual transmission vehicle you are entitled to tow either manual or automatic vehicles. Your vehicle must be legal and roadworthy and have no warning lights showing, e.g the engine management system warning light. It must not be subject to a manufacturers safety recall, you may be asked for evidence that your vehicle has had the work carried out, is exempt from the recall or that after being checked no work was necessary.
The vehicle also needs to be a smoke free zone. Their are other requirements involving loading, head restraints, mirrors etc that we can provide details of when undertaking training with us. We provide a trailer which meets all DVSA requirements.

Why Choose A Get Towing… Trailer Training Course ?
Get Towing are a trailer training provider that specialise in driver training for all types of trailers, including the car / van and trailer towing test (B+E).
Pass your test quickly with Get Towing car and trailer training courses.
We have an exceptionally high first time pass rate with our DVSA qualified Driving instructors. Our car and trailer (B+E) driver training courses are between 6 and 18 hours (1 to 3) days duration depending upon your driving experience and towing ability.
To fully prepare you for the DVSA driving test standard. If you are unsure which B+E training course you require we can discuss your requirements on a short phone call to 07956 321678 and see which trailer training course is most suitable.
A theory test or medical is not required for the B+E test. Get Towing Driver Training offers car and trailer test training to individuals, groups and company’s on a 1 to 1 or 2 to 1 basis.
The B+E test is conducted at the DVSA large goods vehicle driving test centre with an off road manoeuvring area. The test lasts about 90 minutes. A VERY HIGH standard of driving is required to pass this type of test.
At the start of the test you are required to carry out an eye sight test. A few questions relating to the safety and loading of the outfit will then be asked. You then drive the outfit onto the manoeuvring area and complete the reversing exercise accurately and safely. You will drive in varying roads and traffic conditions including motorways where possible, complete uphill, downhill and angled starts and demonstrate a high standard of driving throughout.
Back at the test centre you will then un-couple the vehicle from the trailer, you are then required to re-couple the trailer safely.
Changes to driving licence rules for towing trailers and caravans
From 19 January 2013, driving licence rules will be changing for towing trailers and caravans. To find out more about the changes, follow the link below.
In this article reference is made to the maximum authorised mass (MAM) of vehicles and trailers. This should be taken to mean the permissible maximum weight, also known as the gross vehicle weight.
Car licences held before 1 January 1997
All drivers who passed a car test before 1 January 1997 retain their existing entitlement to tow trailers until their licence expires. This means they are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM. They also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kgs MAM.
Drivers who hold subcategory C1+E – limited to 8.25 tonnes MAM, may apply for provisional entitlement to the new subcategory C1+E, in order to take and pass the test which will increase their combined vehicle and trailer entitlement to 12 tonnes MAM. It is not necessary to gain subcategory C1 entitlement first but drivers have to meet higher medical standards, and pass both the category C theory test and the subcategory C1+E practical test.
Large goods vehicle and passenger carrying vehicle licences held before 1 January 1997
Since 1 January 1997 all drivers who hold category C or D entitlement have been limited tow trailers up to 750kgs MAM; Category C+E or D+E must be held in order to tow trailers in excess of this.
Car driving licence first obtained since 1 January 1997
Drivers who passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 are required to pass an additional driving test in order to gain entitlement to category B+E and all larger vehicles. In addition to the new driving tests, drivers of vehicles which fall within subcategories C1, C1+E, D1 and D1+E also have to meet higher medical standards.
Upgrading entitlement for trailers
In general, an additional driving test is required for each category or subcategory of entitlement. But there are certain exceptions to this where drivers have already passed one test which involves trailer entitlement for a larger or equivalent sized vehicle.
This means that passing a test for subcategory C1+E or D1+E upgrades category B entitlement to B+E. A test pass for subcategory C1+E upgrades subcategory D1, if held, to D1+E. But a test pass for subcategory D1+E does not upgrade subcategory C1 to C1+E because the trailer size required for a subcategory D1+E test is smaller than that required for a subcategory C1+E test.
Provisional trailer entitlement
This means that although drivers may have been driving a vehicle and trailer combination legitimately, under ‘L’ plates, they are not permitted to sit a trailer test using such a combination until a test has been passed in a rigid vehicle and a full licence obtained for that category.
This information is not intended to be a definitive statement of law.

Trailer Training and getting your trailer licence can be confusing. Here is some information to hep>>
Learning to tow a trailer with
Get Towing Trailer Training
We provide B+E trailer towing training courses in most locations throughout South Essex.
We provide trailer training for main trailer test centres for this area in West Thurrock, Enfield and Chelmsford.
Our trailer training is tailored to meet your needs and keeping your costs to a minimum. Choose from a single day course for experienced drivers, or multiple day course that include the test. Use your own vehicles or trailers to keep your costs down, or use our vehicles and trailers.
Are you entitled to tow?
Your car licence was obtained before 1 January 1997
If you passed a car test before 1 January 1997 you keep your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. This means you’re generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM). You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kgs MAM.
Your car licence was obtained on or after 1 January 1997
If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you’re limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn’t exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. You will need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.
Car and trailer practical test
The car and trailer test (B+E) is based on the lorry driving test and lasts for approximately one hour. The towing test (B+E) is based on a number of elements including the following:
vehicle safety questions
an off-road reverse manoeuvre
Several controlled stops, uphill, downhill, on the level, on a gradient and at an angle.
uncoupling and recoupling of the trailer off road.
Your practical driving test will include approximately ten minutes of independent driving. This is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions independently.
Is this the correct course for you
The trailer towing courses are for individuals and companies with staff who need to pass the B+E trailer towing test in order to comply with the above regulations. These trailer training courses can take place at locations near you, if you have a suitable facility, the training can be completed on your own premises. Without the proper training the B+E test will be very difficult to pass. As a qualified examiner I will prepare you not just for the test but to tow with skill, confidence and safety. The courses are either two or three day courses depending on your ability and include the test on the final day of the course.
one day trailer training course = £399
two day trailer licence course = £599
good luck and safe towing
Get Towing has another pass this week. Kevin passed his car and trailer training course and trailer test in West Thurrock on the first attempt.
Well done to Kevin who passed his B+E (car and trailer) driving test at West Thurrock Driving Test Centre in Essex.
Kev met me at Get Towing trailer training head quarters in Southend-on-Sea in Essex where we carry out the trailer training courses and completed a 2 day intensive trailer training driving course and B+E driving test to gain his trailer licence.
He enquired for a ‘trailer licence and ‘B+E Trailer Test’
The Examiner for the B+E driving test complemented him on a safe drive with only 2 minors, a very good result as you don’t know the West Thurrock, South Ockendon and Aveley areas of Essex that well.
The reversing exercise on the trailer test was completed with no minor faults after practicing it many times at our reversing site, before the trailer test really helped.
After that Kev had to carry out the un-couple and re-couple exercise, which scored no minors faults as again we practiced this many times as well.
His trailer licence should be back to his home address within 2 weeks as the examiner sent it off for him as his address on the drivers licence was the same as where he currently living.
The roundabouts in that part of Essex can be tricky, but Kev coped well on his trailer training course with the difficult junctions around the parts of Essex that we drove around.
Basildon trailer training routes can be particularly challenging if you are not used to the layout.
Basildon and Laindon are noted for their three lane approach roundabouts and unusual junctions particular difficult in a car and trailer.
We carry out these trailer training courses and trailer tests all over the Essex area at locations including; Basildon, Enfield, Dagenham, Ilford, Romford, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Colchester…
Well done again Kev, work will be easier now with the trailer 🙂

Why get professional trailer training?
Depending on when you passed your driving licence, you may be required to pass an additional test to tow certain types of trailers. The law changed on 1st January 1997, below is a rough guide to driving licence categories and dates. For more detailed information, please refer to the DVSA website
I passed my test before 1997
If you passed your driving test before January 1st 1997 your licence should have Category E. This allows you to drive a vehicle and trailer with a combined weight of 8.25 tonnes, the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM).
I passed my test after 1997
If you passed your driving test after 1st January 1997, your licence will allow you drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes towing a of up to 750kg. Or a vehicle and trailer up to 3.5 tonnes, as long as the trailer does not exceed the kerb (unladen) weight of the vehicle.
Are you Legal?
If you passed your test before 1997 you’re generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass (M.A.M.)
If you passed your test later than the 1st January 1997 you’re limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes M.A.M. towing a trailer up to 750 kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes M.A.M. providing the M.A.M. of the trailer doesn’t exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. You will need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.
To tow a caravan, horse-box boat or other trailer over a certain weight you will need to add category E to your car license B.
This means another driving test B+E carried out with a laden trailer (carrying 600kg of weight)
If you passed your test before 1997 you will have category B+E on your license for anyone else have a look on the Direct Gov website.
Out team can help you arrange your car and trailer training course, and trailer test, to help you gain a trailer licence.
A call or email to Get Towing will get you on the road to completing a trailer training course and hopefully soon after that a trailer licence.
There are 2 main courses available for trailer training and these are completed on consecutive days and normally have 5 to 6 hours per day. The last 1.5 hours are arranged as the trailer practical test, and gain a trailer licence. There is no theory test with the car and trailer B+E category.
After completing your B+E (car & trailer) training you will need to take your Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) trailer driving test. On arrival at the test centre the driving examiners will greet you at the appointment time and ask to see your driving licence. From there you will go outside to perform an eyesight check.
You will need to be able to read a number plate from 20.5 metres (62 feet) away. If you cannot read the number plate, with or without glasses/lenses you will not be allowed to take your trailer driving test.
After successfully reading the number plate you will need to answer 5 safety check questions. Driving instructors commonly refer to these as the show me tell me questions as they all start with – Show me how to check or Tell me how you would check.
Its then time to complete the reversing exercise. You will need to drive the car and trailer onto a purpose built area and reverse from one end of the area to the other whilst avoiding a cone in the middle of the reversing area, known as cone ‘B’. The trailer will need to end inside a box, made of cones and with the back of the trailer over hanging a hatched area.
After the reversing exercise you will be taken out on the road for approximately 50 minutes. Whilst out on the road you will be expected to be able to deal with all the normal junctions and hazards you will find in and around town as well as deal with the traffic on a dual carriageway.
Common things to fail on, whilst out on the road are,
Steering problems
Reverse exercise
General positioning
Sign recognition
Crossing lanes on roundabouts
Checking Mirrors
Speeding
Blind Spot Checks when pulling away
Once back at the test centre you will need to perform an un-hitch and hitch exercise. During this you will need to unhitch the trailer from the car and park the car next to the trailer.
Then you will need to be able to re-hitch the trailer making sure you have performed the checks needed to ensure it is connected properly.
Then it’s the big moment when the examiner tells you whether you have passed or failed your trailer test.
It is at this point that your trainer should listen to the debrief to ensure you understand what when wrong and when, if you did do anything wrong of course.
RECAP
The steps of the test are:
Document Check
Eyesight Check
5 Safety Check Questions (Show/Tell)
Reverse exercise
On Road Drive
Un-couple and re-couple
Result and Debrief
Presuming you pass you will get a new trailer licence with the B+E (car + trailer) category on it.
This will allow you to tow larger and heavier trailers.
There are rumours that the car and trailer test will be changing to be in line with the changes presently being made to the car practical test. This has not been confirmed and if it does happen your trainers will be given lots of notice so they can make adjustments
