Top 10 reasons why people fail the B+E car and trailer driving test
Reversing exercise. It’s a tricky exercise, during a trailer training course you will be given plenty of practice on reversing with the trailer. The main problem is keeping calm. I have taught many drivers who show great skills during the practice and show they are very capable of passing this section of the trailer driving test… but put them in the test situation the pressure is on and it sometimes goes wrong, too little steering, too much steering. Panicking. Watch videos, it will really help here is my one… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvuTQsJYsNU
Un coupling a trailer and re-coupling a trailer… this has many faults to avoid here is the correct method in 3 videos Un-coupling a trailer correctly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLeA9zpyfNI&list=UU5l8Id2WmIH4-HFsAuHppMg&index=12
Safety checks on the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bsPVVZAA4U&list=UU5l8Id2WmIH4-HFsAuHppMg&index=6
Re-coupling a trailer correctly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSrxosApI2A&list=UU5l8Id2WmIH4-HFsAuHppMg&index=11
Speeding. Many drivers miss the speed changes. I train drivers to look at every lamp post they pass to get all the information they can. As you will have been told… How do you identify when you are driving in a 30mph area? It will have lamp posts approx. every 200ft with no signs to show any higher or lower speeds!
Poor lane positioning. Usually down to, again, not reading, or seeing signs on the approach to junctions. Planning and awareness during your trailer lessons on the signs and/or clues on the approach to the hazard is key to this. ‘My rule’ when I teach on a car and trailer training course is, if there are 2 lanes going to your intended destination… ‘try’ to use the left option lane
Mirror checking. An old favourite. Just do more of them! when slowing down, signalling and changing lanes. The examiner spends a lot of time looking a the side of your head during a B+E driving test so there is plenty of opportunity to pick up on that clue that he/she is checking what you are doing and looking at! Get your instructor to practice doing this ‘looking at you’ during your trailer training course
Observations at Junctions. Particularly at roundabouts. Adapting to the length of the vehicle during the trailer driving course and B+E driving test is a struggle for some. I teach drivers to always have another look to the right when your about to emerge at a roundabout or junction even if you think ‘it’s safe’ to go, a good habit to get into
Coasting. Old habits die hard. Practice during your trailer training course from you and nagging from your instructor should sort out this problem get used to the feel the effect of engine braking during slowing down using both brake and clutch together. Ensure you leave the vehicle in gear until you come to a halt.
Steering. Seems like a simple job for an experienced driver but on a B+E car and trailer towing course it’s easy to forget the trailer is on the back sometimes for an inexperienced driver and turn into corners too early and too much causing the trailer to go on kerbs, usually to the left! Be careful out there
Car and trailer training can save you time and money
Over the next year the DVSA are carrying out checks on trailers and caravans to make sure they’re safe to be on the roads. Trailer Training and caravan towing courses can help with this issue. This includes looking at their brakes, tyres, lights and towball connections and that the load is secure and not over weight. Make sure you know the rules.
On a Get Towing B+E Car and Trailer Training B+E trailer course you will be shown how to check your trailer to ensure that it is safe to use on the road
With Towing Lessons on a trailer training course you’ll be more likely to keep safe on the roads

The one day course consists of a 6 hour session costing £399. ——NO OTHER HIDDEN COSTS!—-

The two day course consists of two 6 hour sessions costing £599. ——NO OTHER HIDDEN COSTS!—-
What does the training involve?
The training will be based on meeting the criteria for successfully pass the trailer test. In addition we also introduce some advanced eco/safe driving skills which will enhance your driving skills for life.
You will need to demonstrate that you can drive to a high and safe standard when towing.
You must demonstrate that you can safely uncouple and recouple your trailer to your vehicle.
You will need to know that all the trailer lights are working and that inspect the trailer as if you had never previously used it.
You must demonstrate how to reverse your trailer (‘s’ manoeuvre) over a distance into a relatively confined (but sufficiently wide) area into a marked stopping position which will require you to judge the length of your car and trailer combination.
We will cover the basic vehicle check questions 2 of which will be asked by the examiner.
What does the Driving test involve?
This test is based on the lorry driving test and lasts for approx.1.5 hours. Do not underestimate the skills you will need to demonstrate for this test.
Every B+E driving test takes approx. 90 mins to complete. B+E Driving tests are only conducted at HGV (bus & lorry) driving test centres. You MUST bring your valid driving license! The examiner will need to see and check it before you begin the test.
At Get Towing… We have a test centre to visit nearby in West Thurrock and Chelmsford
At the start of the test you will be required to read a number plate to check your eyesight. You will then be asked a number of Questions about the safety of your vehicle & trailer. We issue all our pupils with the “Show Me Tell Me” Questions. Study these in your own time. You then have to complete a reverse manoeuvre.
The road drive will include a 10-20 minute independent driving session. Upon return to the test centre you will need to demonstrate the uncoupling and re-coupling procedure. Let us teach you how to perform the “S Manoeuvre” (which you have to be able to do independently). We will explain the DSA method of reversing and all the safety checks you will need to know. Our Trainers will teach you how to carry out your lighting checks and the order in which you will have to couple and uncouple the trailer when you are on the trailer driving test.
Do not underestimate the standard of driving that you will need to achieve to be successful in the B+E test. The majority of drivers that fail the B+E test do so because their road driving skills do not meet the required standard. If you make mistakes on test the crucial issue is not to worry, the mistake might be less serious and may not affect your result. The examiner is looking for an overall safe standard of driving during the driving test.
Tow vehicles test requirements
You can take your test in either a Manual or Automatic transmission vehicle. We can help if you want to use one of our manual towing vehicles for the trailer training and B+E driving test purposes. If you pass using an automatic then you are entitled to tow using only an automatic transmission. If you pass using a manual transmission vehicle you are entitled to tow either manual or automatic vehicles. Your vehicle must be legal and roadworthy and have no warning lights showing, e.g the engine management system warning light. It must not be subject to a manufacturers safety recall, you may be asked for evidence that your vehicle has had the work carried out, is exempt from the recall or that after being checked no work was necessary.
The vehicle also needs to be a smoke free zone. Their are other requirements involving loaded weight, head restraints, mirrors etc that we can provide details of when undertaking trailer training with us. We provide a trailer which meets all DVSA requirements.

caravan towing test, B+E car and trailer towing test
Not everyone needs to pass a caravan towing test. It depends on when you passed your test. It can also depend on the weight of your vehicle and your choice of a caravan.
Do you want to know about the B+E trailer test, then we can help you all the way. Generally, if you passed your driving test before 1st January 1997, then you can tow most caravans on a B+E driving licence. The way to find out is to check the back on your photo card licence for the following;
In column 9 you are looking for category B+E, which means you can tow a trailer up to 3,500kg.
Look in column 10 you will see the day you gained the entitlement, which should be before 1st January 1997, if you have the entitlement.
And in column 11 the year your entitlement runs out.
If these are there, then you have a B+E trailer entitlement.

Does my vehicle require me to take a caravan towing test?
caravan towing test
At Get Towing trailer training, we like to help our clients pass their BE trailer test first time and give plenty of trailer test tips. Whether you have to take a caravan towing test, may depend on what vehicle you are using. There is advice from the caravan club on matching car and caravan. The caravan club advises that the trailer or caravan behind should not be higher than 85% of the kerbweight of the tow car. You can look in your handbook or on the internet, as to what your vehicle can tow. The other place to look is a chassis plate, which is usually inside the engine bay or door pillar.
What you should consider is not risking not checking both your licence and vehicle weights. Remember that if your licence requires you to take a caravan towing test. Then find a reputable company to advise you. Here are 3 reasons to choose us today.
What to expect on a caravan towing test

Remember the following and it can save you a lot of money.
Bring a current up to date driving licence, including any changes of address (not always ness)
If you wear glasses or contact lenses, then remember to bring them. There is an eyesight check at the start of the test.
Revise the show me, tell me questions. As a company, we supply all of this to you. Ask us how this can help you on 07956 321678 or email us!
Watch videos and learn how to take a caravan or trailer safely on and off your vehicle.
You can expect to be able to reverse on the caravan towing test, while under control, with accuracy and good all round observations.
