Do you need to get your employees on a towing course?

For compliance, Information is listed below for the Employer:

When towing for work, it is important that Employers, Employees and the Self-employed ensure that all Health and Safety Laws are adhered to….

This includes The Corporate Manslaughter Act 2007 and PUWER 1998

The trailer will be seen as a piece of work equipment, which must be fit for purpose and checked regularly.  This also means, if someone is towing as part of their work duties, they ‘MUST’ receive appropriate training to ensure that they comply with PUWER 1998.

  • Must ensure work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair
  • A machine has a maintenance log, keep this up to date
  • Must ensure that all people using, supervising or managing the use of work equipment are provided with adequate, clear health and safety information. This will include, where necessary, written instructions on its use and suitable equipment markings and warnings
  • Must ensure that all people who use, supervise or manage the use of work equipment have received adequate training, which should include the correct use of the equipment, the risks that may arise from its use and the precautions to take

We run a few different lengths of course to cater for all drivers with B+E and improve their trailer towing skills.

They can start with a full trailer training course preparing someone starting as a novice to trailer towing, to be safe and be ready, through to B+E courses that can be specifically tailored for someone who already has the trailer licence entitlement but has never towed before.

We are experts in towing training and giving lessons/coaching with trailers and in all aspects of B+E usage.

Lessons for caravan towing, lessons for horse box towing and towing with commercial vehicles (up to 3.5 tonne vans) are very popular with our clients.

Do I need a B+E trailer training course?

Not sure if you need a trailer training course with us? No problem – here are some things for you to consider, but please call us if you’re still uncertain.

If you have taken your B (car) category test before 1st January 1997 you have already been given the B+E (trailer) category automatically and usually can tow a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8250kg (This particular example would be in a category C1 [7.5t gross weight] vehicle with a 750kg trailer)
If you have taken your B (car) test on or after 1st January 1997 your license has been updated, you can tow a trailer as long as the total trailer weight does not exceed the permissible weight for that vehicle, or be over 3.5t. The Legal maximum is 3.5t vehicle and a 3.5t trailer if the plated weights allow .
